Why movement matters so much

As we get older, staying active becomes one of the most important things we can do for our health. Regular gentle movement helps maintain muscle strength, improve balance, reduce fall risk, and support mental wellbeing. The good news is that it doesn't take much — even 10–15 minutes of gentle exercise each day can make a significant difference.

How to encourage without pushing

One of the most common challenges carers face is encouraging a loved one to exercise without making them feel pressured. Here are some approaches that work:

  • 1Start a conversation, not a lecture. Ask how they're feeling about their mobility rather than telling them they need to exercise.
  • 2Make it about them, not you. Focus on what they want: staying independent, playing with grandchildren, walking to the shops.
  • 3Start small. Suggest just 5 minutes to begin with. Once they start, they often continue.
  • 4Do it together. Exercising alongside someone is far more motivating than watching them.

Practical tips for getting started

  • Choose a regular time. Morning works well for many people, before the day gets busy.
  • Create a comfortable space. Clear a small area in the living room. A sturdy chair nearby is all that's needed.
  • Remove barriers. Make sure the TV remote, phone and any trip hazards are out of the way.
  • Celebrate every session. Even a short session is a win. Acknowledge it.

What to do if they're nervous or resistant

It's very common for older adults to feel nervous about exercise, especially after a fall or health scare. Reassure them that everything Elliot teaches is gentle, safe and designed specifically for people who haven't exercised in a long time. The free 30-day journey is a wonderful starting point, it arrives by email, so there's no pressure to 'perform' in front of anyone.

A gentle note on health conditions

Elliot's exercises are gentle, low-impact and designed with older adults in mind. Everything can be adapted to suit different abilities. If your loved one has any concerns about starting, encourage them to take it slowly, use the seated modifications, and listen to their body. There is no rush and no pressure.
